My predictions for the Oscars will be presented below with minimal commentary. I&#8217;ll save my outrage for the night of the actual ceremony, when I&#8217;ll post the winners and my reactions in red text. Though I will say that the horrendous nominations oversights made for some great awards races. The competitions are much closer to call than they&#8217;ve been for quite some time, so at least we can look forward to a more exciting night.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I&#8217;ve got a strong record of correctly guessing at least two out of three. Last year, I only missed three out of 24. Here&#8217;s hoping for luck that&#8217;s just as good this year.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Looks like the red carpet is finally over. Let&#8217;s get to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And NPH hits us with a racial joke right out of the gate. Then NPH starts singing about how no one&#8217;s drinking, then Cumberbatch is there with a flask and a &#8220;fuck you.&#8221; The night&#8217;s off to a strong start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8230;Anna Kendrick, I love you, but NPH was doing just fine before you came along. And Jack Black isn&#8217;t helping matters either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8230;Actually, I take that back. Jack Black&#8217;s intervention did a great job of addressing all the cynicism surrounding the Oscars and Hollywood. It was a neat little reality check, though this whole opening segment is a fantastic love letter to movies past and present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And just like that, NPH deservedly became the next go-to Oscars host. Here&#8217;s hoping AMPAS can take him away from the Tonys for another few years in the future. So far, he&#8217;s doing a fantastic job of making an argument for why the Oscars are still relevant and why movies still matter, with just the right amount of self-effacing humor. This is easily the best hosting job I think I&#8217;ve ever seen, though that&#8217;s not saying much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Supporting Actor<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should Win:<\/strong> Mark Ruffalo,\u00a0<em>Foxcatcher<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b>Will Win:<\/b> J.K. Simmons, <i>Whiplash<\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Did Win:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0J.K. Simmons, <i>Whiplash<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">It sucks that Ruffalo didn&#8217;t get the Oscar for the best performance of his career, but Simmons is a superb character actor who&#8217;s had this coming for a long time. Even if the character is a malicious exaggeration of musical education, there&#8217;s no denying that he played it well. And good on Simmons for keeping it humble and funny in a heartfelt way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Now we have the host&#8217;s running joke for the ceremony. The concept of the host&#8217;s Oscar predictions is a little clunky, but at least I&#8217;m intrigued. Plus, involving the folks behind the scenes of the Oscars was a neat touch. I&#8217;m not interested\u00a0enough to follow the livestream of the fucking glass box, but still.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Are we piping in the orchestra again this year? For fuck&#8217;s sake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Adam Levine begins singing, and I immediately start wishing that Keira Knightley&#8217;s version of the song was the one that got nominated. No chance of a duet? Anything to distract from Levine&#8217;s godawful voice? No? Well, okay then. At least the band is up onstage playing with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8220;Tell Me If You Wanna Go Home&#8221; should&#8217;ve been the one to get nominated, dammit!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And NPH just made a joke about how absolutely no one in the whole country appreciates the ridiculously expensive gift bags. The occasional clunker joke aside, I love the job he&#8217;s doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Costume Design<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Should Win:<\/b> Milena Canonero,\u00a0<em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Win:<\/strong>\u00a0Milena Canonero,\u00a0<em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Did Win:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Milena Canonero,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I&#8217;m just grateful that it didn&#8217;t go to\u00a0<em>Maleficent<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Into the Woods.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Okay, NPH, that &#8220;with her spoon&#8221; joke was just awful. Sorry\u00a0<em>Jupiter Ascending<\/em> sucked so bad!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Yeah, it sucks that we all have to learn how to pronounce &#8220;Chiwetel Ejiofor,&#8221; doesn&#8217;t it, NPH?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Foreign Language Film<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should Win:\u00a0<\/strong>No preference<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Win:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Ida<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Did Win:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0<em>Ida<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Still haven&#8217;t seen it, but going with the nominee that landed a few other nominations is usually a sure bet. Good thing the wrap-up music started playing. Pawel Pawlikowski\u00a0would keep talking until he ran out of words. He&#8217;s\u00a0hopelessly flustered, bless his heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Shirley MacLaine is still alive?! Holy cow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If Eddie Redmayne wins, can he please deliver his acceptance speech with the voice he used in\u00a0<em>Jupiter Ascending<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Now NPH introduces us to the &#8220;seat-fillers.&#8221; And that was our filler segment. How fitting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This &#8220;Everything is Awesome!!!&#8221; segment is just as colorful and batshit crazy as we could ever have hoped. It&#8217;s a thing of beauty. And then Batman comes in (Will Arnett himself, wearing the costume from <em>Batman Forever<\/em>!), followed by a keyboardist\u00a0with a Devo hat. This is so freaking gorgeous. I love it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ooh, the short films. Always the toughest to predict. Better late than never, I suppose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And NPH called the Academy on snubbing David Oyelowo. And somehow, bringing Oyelowo in on the joke actually didn&#8217;t suck. Phenomenal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They follow up that performance of &#8220;Everything is Awesome!!!&#8221; with this Tim McGraw downer? Whose bright idea was that?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A\u00a0<em>Birdman<\/em> parody? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2015\/2\/21\/8082781\/sesame-street-birdman-parody-academy-awards-2015\">Big Bird did it better<\/a>, though the Miles Teller cameo was a neat touch, and the &#8220;noble profession&#8221; punchline was cute. I don&#8217;t care how much Oscar buzz\u00a0<em>American Sniper<\/em> had going into the ceremony, the music in\u00a0<em>Whiplash<\/em> was incredible and superbly presented. Nope. This one should go to the one that creates brand-new sounds that don&#8217;t really exist. It should have gone to\u00a0<em>The Hobbit<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Interstellar<\/em>, or even\u00a0<em>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>. But a war movie? God knows she earned those accolades. And it&#8217;s clear that Arquette put a lot of thought and effort into that acceptance speech. Even her fellow nominees were glad to see her win after that speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Incidentally, Twitter informs\u00a0me that Streep has never had an Oscar losing streak longer than two years. Still, this was a great one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NPH is really taking the Academy to task for all the nomination snubs, isn&#8217;t he? I guess I severely underestimated the cultural impact\u00a0<em>Big Hero 6<\/em> had. And of course, I thought\u00a0<em>HtTYD2<\/em> was the better film. That movie already has a sequel in development and\u00a0<em>Big Hero 6<\/em> doesn&#8217;t, so Disney had better get cranking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Then again, we all know what the year&#8217;s best animated film really was, don&#8217;t we?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wait, wait, wait. The AMPAS is predominately made of white men over 40, and its president is a black woman? I&#8217;m genuinely shocked and pleased to learn about this. Sorry you didn&#8217;t get nominated this year, even though you totally should have!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Cinematography<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Should Win:<\/b> Emmanuel Lubezki,\u00a0<em>Birdman<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Win:<\/strong>\u00a0Emmanuel Lubezki,\u00a0<em>Birdman<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Did Win:\u00a0<\/strong>Emmanuel Lubezki,\u00a0<em>Birdman<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Grand Budapest Hotel<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> looked amazing, but come on. Plus, back-to-back wins for Grandmaster Lubezki? Yeah, that\u00a0<em>Tree of Life<\/em>\u00a0snub is totally forgiven now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">As long as we have a commercial break, why the hell did NPH mention\u00a0<em>A Million Ways to Die in the West<\/em>?! If he really had &#8220;pooped in a hat&#8221; onstage, it would have been just as awkward, uncomfortable, and unfunny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">They brought out Meryl Streep to introduce the &#8220;In Memoriam&#8221; segment instead of NPH. The way things are going tonight, I&#8217;d say that was a good call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This segment is never easy to watch. Every year is a bad year for celebrity deaths, and having to relive the previous year of losses is just painful. What makes it even worse is that as a child of the &#8217;90s, I&#8217;m rapidly approaching the age when my childhood icons are going to be dying on a regular basis. I&#8217;m not looking forward to it. Just losing Robin Williams was agony enough for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I&#8217;m still not entirely sure if getting Jennifer Hudson is an upgrade from Bette Midler last year. That aside, why can&#8217;t we have more tribute graphics playing while she sings? I&#8217;m sure there are plenty more deceased icons of cinema that didn&#8217;t get a mention &#8212; there always are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Film Editing<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should Win:<\/strong>\u00a0Tom Cross,\u00a0<em>Whiplash<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Win:<\/strong> Sandra Adair,\u00a0<em>Boyhood<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Did Win:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0Tom Cross,\u00a0<em>Whiplash<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Much as I love\u00a0<em>Boyhood<\/em>, this award absolutely went to the right candidate. The editing work in\u00a0<em>Whiplash<\/em> was an absolute masterpiece. It kills me to say it, but the editing in\u00a0<em>Boyhood<\/em> was surprisingly subdued, given the sheer mass of film that I&#8217;m sure was shot over twelve years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wow, is Terence Howard campaigning for these movies? Or is he trying to win an Oscar for himself? The voting&#8217;s over, dude!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Yes, NPH, stick with the jokes about Oscar snubs. That&#8217;s what you&#8217;re good at. I mean, sure the song is awful, but the Academy needs to look socially relevant without giving\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em> any other nominations or awards. Especially since this is probably the only decent performance he&#8217;s put in so far. Then again, I guess one decent performance is all it takes to win an Oscar. I&#8217;m so glad Redmayne seems to know that this could go away at any moment, because I expect it will. Though given his amazing performance in this film, I hope I&#8217;m wrong. Anyway, it&#8217;s not like\u00a0<em>Jupiter Ascending<\/em> could have been entirely his fault, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Oh, and after\u00a0<em>Selma<\/em> and\u00a0<em>The Imitation Game<\/em> got jaw-dropping token acceptance speeches with incredible social relevance, does anyone else feel that Redmayne squandered his shot?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Best Actress<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should Win:<\/strong> Rosamund Pike,\u00a0<em>Gone Girl<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Win:\u00a0<\/strong>Julianne Moore,\u00a0<em>Still Alice<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Did Win:<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0Julianne Moore,\u00a0<em>Still Alice<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">And Julianne Moore gets her Oscar just for being Julianne Moore. Congratulations. Then again, this was a terrible year for leading female roles, and maybe we should make Rosamund Pike work a little bit harder for her Oscar. Given her career so far, this could easily be a fluke. With Moore?\u00a0<em>Seventh Son<\/em> be damned, this performance was clearly no fluke. And even though I maintain that we didn&#8217;t need a great performance or a movie to put a face on such a common illness, a higher profile for Alzheimer&#8217;s is never a bad thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Incidentally, does anyone else find it kind of hilarious that Kristen Stewart got mentioned in an acceptance speech at the fucking Academy Awards?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">***<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Of course no one tried to take the key to the box because we&#8217;re way over time and NO ONE FUCKING CARES!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">&#8230;Okay, so the envelope was a prediction of all the meme-worthy moments from tonight.
