Movie Curiosities

The online diary of an aspiring movie nerd

My 23rd Birthday Retrospective

There’s been a question on my mind for many years now, never more so than in the past few months that I’ve been writing this blog. It’s certainly not a secret that I absolutely love movies, but I can’t for the life of me explain precisely why. I expect that the reason would be long and complex, involving thoughts and emotions that I can’t express within the limits of the English language. Still, if there is a reason, I expect it will be somewhere in my next few blog entries.

Next Sunday, July 18th, will be my 23rd birthday. The first in which I’ve had any kind of blog. To that end, I’ve decided to mark the occasion by using this blog as a means of reflection.

I’ve gone through my DVD library and pulled seven very special movies. They’re not necessarily the greatest movies ever made. Hell, only half of them rank among the greatest movies I’ve ever seen. No, these movies were selected because they hold great sentimental value to me. These are the movies that shaped me into the man and the movie lover I am today. The movies that changed my life.

Though yes, I will make my argument that one of them is the greatest movie ever made. I’m not expecting much controversy about it.

Every day from tomorrow until the 18th, I’ll be posting an entry to talk about one of these movies. They’ll be posted in order of convenience. The posts for each one will contain my stories about that particular movie and describe exactly what makes it so special to me. I’ve always been sincere in each of my blog entries, but this is me painting a big red bulls-eye on my chest. I expect you’ll disagree with me or ridicule me for at least one of these entries, but this is my life and I’m giving it to you straight.

These are my deepest thoughts and most intimate details about my life as an aspiring movie nerd. If you’re reading this, then there’s a good chance that you’re among my closest friends and family anyway, so I hope you’ll stay tuned and read on.

P.S. Naturally, I’ll still be posting entries outside the retrospective when necessary. I’m planning to go see a very special movie tomorrow, and I’ll be damned if I don’t put up a review of Inception as quickly as possible.

I hold a B.S. in Bioinformatics, the only one from Pacific University's Class of '09. I was the stage-hand-in-chief of my high school drama department and I'm a bass drummer for the Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers. I dabble in video games and I'm still pretty good at DDR. My primary hobby is going online for upcoming movie news. I am a movie buff, a movie nerd, whatever you want to call it. Comic books are another hobby, but I'm not talking about Superman or Spider-Man or those books that number in the triple-digits. I'm talking about Watchmen, Preacher, Sandman, etc. Self-contained, dramatic, intellectual stories that couldn't be accomplished in any other medium. I'm a proud son of Oregon, born and raised here. I've been just about everywhere in North and Central America and I love it right here.
