If you’re so unfortunate that you don’t know what Scott Pilgrim is about… well, the trailers spelled it out pretty well. A Canadian slacker literally meets the girl of his dreams, but has to defeat her seven evil exes before they can date in peace. It’s like a twenty-something romance/coming-of-age tale, told with humor, energy and sincerity, wrapped in references and parodies of movies, music and video games.
What, you’re still reading this? Why aren’t you reading the books? Go ahead and read them. Right now. You can come back to this blog entry later, it isn’t going anywhere.
In case I haven’t already made it clear, I’ve been waiting on this film for a very long time. I watched the production blogs, I saw the daily behind-the-scenes pictures from director Edgar Wright, I read the wild accolades coming in from advance screenings. And just when I had given up waiting for an early look at the movie, that teaser showed up last March. I still have it on my desktop and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen it.
Flash forward to a few days ago, when Wright promised to release another trailer when the movie’s Facebook page reached 100,000 followers. Well, it happened and Wright kept his word, just in time for Memorial Day.
My first reaction is that if I had any lingering doubts about Michael Cera playing Scott Pilgrim, those doubts are now gone. Every line he has in this new trailer is pure gold, translated perfectly from page to screen with all the sincerity required. Also, that bit where he throws the package in the trash? That’s new and it’s great.
I already knew that the rest of the cast was perfectly suited, but watching more of them in action and in character is some other kind of fantastic. No words can do justice to what I’m seeing Mary Elizabeth Winstead do with Ramona Flowers. Ditto for Kieran Culkin as Scott Pilgrim’s secret weapon, Wallace Wells. Julie Powers looks like she jumped right off the page, Matthew Patel is the perfect combination of bravado and cluelessness… they’re all just amazing. I wish we could’ve seen a bit more of Knives Chau, but the fleeting glimpse of her in action was just perfect.
I love the new little sound effect graphics thrown in (the doorbell, Kim Pine counting off), but this might be more effective in trailer form. I’m a touch worried about oversaturation in the final product, but I have faith that this will work. And anyway, a bit of oversaturation is worth it to see Kim’s “BLAM” gag translated to screen.
It should be clear by now that I’m already in love with this movie. I love every second of both trailers. I love the comedy, I love the visuals, I love the cast and I love the direction. I really need more Scott Pilgrim and I’m very thankful that I won’t have to wait much longer for it.
The sixth and final book will hit stores on July 20th. Pre-order it here. The movie will arrive shortly after, on August 13th. Be there.
[…] I downloaded myself a nice 1080p copy, and started seeing some crazy-awesome stuff. Right from the start. There’s a ridiculous number of shots so it’s worth slowing things down… (for a great general analysis, see my friend Curi’s.) […]
